🚨 Welcome back to this special edition of LinkedIn News Tech Stack 🚨 Chipmaker NVIDIA has emerged as the biggest winner of the AI gold rush 💰, propelling the Silicon Valley-based company to the trillion-dollar club. But what's responsible for the company's roaring success? 📈 According to CEO Jensen Huang, it's the bet the company made on not just building an accelerated computing platform, but also creating an ecosystem around its products. "Our perspective wasn't to build a great graphics chip — our perspective was to enable the applications to somehow be better," he said. "We had to shape, shift and inspire an entire industry to follow." Last week, tech editor Tanya Dua was at #TiEcon2024 in Santa Clara where Huang and other tech heavy-hitters like Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora spoke — sharing their perspectives on the rise of AI while also reflecting on where they see it going next. Here are the top takeaways — share your own in the comments below if you attended the conference.

Europe is a big missed opportunity for growth-stage B2B startups. Here’s why, according to Frontline Ventures' Brennan O'Donnell, who joins us for this week's VC Wednesdays.

🚨Frontline VenturesBrennan O'Donnell jumped into investing after nearly two decades of helping tech companies like Google scale their global teams. He joins us for VC Wednesdays.🚨 🖋️ You recently raised a $200 million fund. What are the main areas of focus for that? It’s spread roughly evenly between our early-stage fund, which brings European companies into the U.S., and our growth fund, which helps U.S. startups with European expansion. In terms of sectors, we're B2B-focused, but not necessarily focused on any particular category. Having said that, AI is definitely interesting, and we’ve got companies like Forethought, People.ai and MosaicML (now a part of Databricks) in our portfolio. A lot of the generative AI startups are yet to reach the growth stage, but a theme for us is companies that are providing a foundation for others to be able to leverage AI as a tool to build products. We also think there’s many tailwinds around all things security. 🖋️ Why does Frontline focus on helping B2B founders expand into Europe? Europe accounts for over 30% of global revenues of top-performing B2B software companies at IPO, according to research we’ve done. It's the first addressable market outside of the U.S., and the first step on the way to truly being a global business. And yet, nobody else was doing it. So we jumped on the opportunity given our unique operating experience in the domain. One example is Vanta, a category leader in the security and compliance space. They've been expanding into Europe over the last 18 to 24 months, and we’ve been helping them out with their go-to-market and talent strategy. 🖋️ What’s the top thing you look for in a growth-stage startup? There are two things. One is founders with global ambition, since Europe is a material market and is often underappreciated by both U.S. founders and investors. The second is startups that are category leaders. At the stages we invest in, we usually have a strong conviction and hypothesis on who the category leader is going to be  and the size of the market that they’re either entering or creating, based on both qualitative and quantitative metrics as well as customer data. 🖋️ What’s the biggest mistake that growth-stage startups make? When you’ve achieved product-market fit and are thinking about leveraging that growth as a founder, you can add new products, you can expand into new segments of the market, or you can expand into new geographies. One of the biggest mistakes that founders make is getting that calculation wrong. They gravitate toward new products or going after new segments, but it’s a much heavier lift and much more tricky to find product-market fit again, versus thinking about expanding the geography. Historically, startups stayed away from expanding into geographies too early. But the ecosystem has changed dramatically, and now waiting to expand too late is a big piece of the equation too. #VCWednesdays #vc #venturecapital #startups #TechonLinkedIn

An internship isn’t just a way for students to fill time over the summer — it’s a way to kickstart a career. A recent LinkedIn analysis found that people who have held internships are likely to land their first full-time role faster than those who haven’t. It also showed that former internship experience can be particularly useful in specific roles. In 2023, the job functions that had the largest share of entry-level talent with prior intern experience were consulting (33.7%), legal (32.5%) and business development (31.4%). That means nearly one-third of early-career professionals in those roles have prior work experience. The job functions with the smallest share of early-career professionals with intern experience include real estate (5.4%), customer success and support (8.7%) and operations (8.8%). Necessary learning for these roles can potentially happen on the job — and all require skills young professionals can cultivate outside of an internship, such as communication and  research skills. Do these findings align with your experience? Has an internship impacted your career trajectory? Weigh in below. Ann Hiatt cut her teeth working for some of Silicon Valley’s most impactful leaders, starting in Jeff Bezos office during the foundational years of Amazon, then joining Google to work with Marissa Mayer and later, Eric Schmidt. Hired as Mayer’s executive business partner on Google’s Product team in 2006, Hiatt was essentially her right hand and deputy in developing key products like Street View, Maps and Navigation. “My first few weeks on the team, I was working 18-hour days, quite literally,” Hiatt recalled. “I didn’t get up from my desk, so much so that I would often miss lunch just because I didn’t even realize the time had passed. I felt like I was kind of buried in this avalanche of tasks and had to kind of dig my way back up to the top.” Eventually, she started to feel like she was getting the hang of things but then a moment of unexpected critical feedback from Mayer led her to completely rethink how she approached her job. Read below this week's #Catalyst newsletter to learn about the “incredible light bulb moment” that changed the course of Hiatt’s career and her great advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed by their inbox.

What’s the best way to explain a gap in your resume? Whether your break from work is due to parenthood or caring for an elderly parent, you just have to “own it,” says PepsiCo Sr. Director of Talent Acquisition Lisa Ashworth. "At one point it was a little bit of a stigma, and maybe we looked at it in a negative way. That’s not the case anymore,” adds PwC Onboarding Leader Rod Adams. How have you address a gap in your resume? Tell us in the comments. For more content about navigating your job search subscribe to #GetHiredhttps://lnkd.in/get-hired
